Ainu language revitalization: Learning from Maori and Te Ataarangi which saved the language from extinction
アイヌ語が話せる人がわずかになる中、ニュージーランドの先住民族マオリの取り組みが注目されている。マオリ語は1970年代に話せる人が激減し、消滅の危機に直面。それを救ったのが、全く話せない人でも流暢な会話が可能になる独特の学習法「テ・アタアランギ法」だ。「理解の始まり」を意味するこの手法をアイヌ語の応用できないか。ーアイヌ語復興に取り組む日高、胆振管内のアイヌ民族の若者、道内外の研究者らが先月下旬、マオリの言語指導者2人を招き、日高管内平取町で学習会を開いた。(記事はさらに続くが省略)
Given the circumstances where the number of people who can speak the Ainu language has decreased, the initiatives of Maori, an indigenous people of New Zealand, have been gaining attention. The Maori language became endangered in the 1970s when the number of speakers drastically decreased. One method that saved the language was a unique approach, called Te Ataarangi through which a person with no language can become able to converse fluently. Te Ataarangi means the beginning of understanding- would it be possible to adapt this approach to Ainu? Ainu youth who work on Ainu language revitalization in the Hidaka and Iburi regions and researchers from in and out of Hokkaido invited Maori language teaching experts and held workshops in Biratori town in Hidaka.
